CHARACTER AGE: 30.
SPECIES:Witch.
BACKGROUND & HISTORY:
“In Siren Cove there’s nowhere... quite like Miller’s Hardware.”– Miller’s Hardware jingle, circa 1955.
Celebrating their sixtieth year in business, the Miller Hardware store was originally opened by Lincoln’s grandparents and is currently run by Lincoln’s mom and dad. The hardware store was where Lincoln spent most of his time growing up: sat reading or doing his homework in the corner, helping out his dad move big items around, helping his mom restore old furniture.
When his powers started to present themselves at an early age, Lincoln’s parents called his grandparents back from whatever retirement cruise they were on. And Lincoln, instead of spending time out the front of the store, would spend time with his grandpa out the back learning his powers and more importantly learning control.
Lincoln was always a big kid: the biggest in his class, Lincoln was too big to pick on but too quiet and shy to make a lot of friends. The friends Lincoln did have, he cherished, especially his childhood friend and most of his childhood friends have remained his friends to this day. And while some of his friends, smart kids with ambition, went away to college to pursue their careers, Lincoln stayed in Siren Cove and worked, like always, at his parent’s store
Although Lincoln loved the store, loved his life, his parents realised that he was drifting through life and they wanted him to live. Encouraged by his parents to do something he was good at, something he enjoyed, or something worthwhile, Lincoln joined the fire department where he could use his abilities to the benefit of others. And he loved it, he felt at home there and the softness that had always lent itself to his body became harder and more defined. And the guys loved him, they loved how he could stay in fires longer and that working together they could try and save more people. And his parents couldn’t be happier that he’s finally found a place where he belongs.
PERSONALITY:
Lincoln has always been a quiet guy. Although he wasn’t physically bullied as a kid, Lincoln was always aware of the remarks people would make about his height and his size. While his friends would take offence for him, for Lincoln staying quiet and fading into the background became Lincoln’s main defence mechanism for a long time. And although he is now physically capable of taking care of himself, he prefers to take a non-violent stance in any confrontation.
Lincoln never had a lot of friends growing up. He was never the centre of attention, he was never the outgoing joker in the class, and because of that he was always on the outside of things. To those who did befriend him, Lincoln always treasured their friendships and remained loyal to his friends even years later. Most of the kids that Lincoln grew up with are still his friends to this day.
Lincoln is kind and sweet natured; he doesn’t have a temper as such and is often the level headed one in his group of friends. Thoughtful and introspective, Lincoln often finds himself thinking logically about problems and that in turn helps present solutions whether that is for fighting fires or taking on an Orc raiding party in a D&D game.
Lincoln is a witch; his powers were for a long time emotive and fluctuated a lot. But after years of learning control with his parents, and particularly his grandfather, Lincoln has learnt a lot of control which always shows in his work and in his personality.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Lincoln’s not the kind of guy who hangs out in the same social circles as the Coombs and Thornton families, so it’s never really come up. As a rule of thumb though he always thought the rivalry between the Montague and Capulet’s was kind of stupid, and no one needs the Coombs/Thornton families repeating that disaster.
LIFESTYLE: Lincoln works as LT on the Engine at Siren Cove’s Fire Department. Working 2-3 24 shift patterns, Lincoln spends a good deal of his time at work on call and pretty much living in the Firehouse. On his days off, he can usually be found in his old fashioned (rent controlled) apartment close in town. It’s nothing fancy but Lincoln likes it, he likes the old fashioned features and all the stairs (even if it does mean he has to help neighbours up them or with their shopping.)
When he’s at the station, between jobs, he can usually be found cleaning the Engine, working out in the gym, or occasionally sat with a book and a bag of chips somewhere. He’s quieter around folks, and his nickname (Honest Abe) has meant most of the other guys hate scamming him at cards (which he is terrible at anyway.) When he’s off duty, he can usually be found hanging out at the library, at his parents’ Hardware store, at the gym, or if it’s a Friday then at one of his friends houses.
Friday nights are sacred nights. If he’s not working shifts, he hangs out with his old school friends drinking beer, playing D&D, and talking about their lives. Mostly guy stuff, even if they’re not all guys and some of the girlfriends join in with the game and the conversation. At the moment, most of the conversation seems to be about Lincoln’s non-existent love life and settling down. His character is a Lawful Good Dwarf (Nain Norrin), is often dragged from one campaign to another if Lincoln can’t make it to a game. His character once managed to lose two fingers on a campaign he hadn’t been part of but his friends had defended him despite often overwhelming peril to their own characters.
Lincoln is pretty sure he’s straight, but he never likes to rule anything out.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Lincoln’s powers are fire specific. He can’t control fire, fire isn’t meant to be controlled and he isn’t stupid enough to try to but he can direct and channel it. Fire doesn’t burn him, though it will burn his clothes and anything else he wears. If it wasn’t for smoke, he could probably spend as long in fires as Sirens do under water. His powers help him in his job, it makes it easier for him to stay in fires longer and rescue as many people. It helps him to direct fires away from areas, to minimise the damage but he can’t put them out with a thought, though he often wishes he could especially after a bad shift at work.
